It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Irena Grazyna Fetter (nee Malinowska) on November 12th, 2023. Irena was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was 86 years old and a long-time resident of Oakville, Ontario.
Born in Slonim, Poland on May 19th, 1937, Irena was the daughter of the late Bronislawa Malinowska (Mozgiel) and Stanislaw Malinowski. As a young girl, she and her family moved to Drawsko Pomorskie and later to Bogatynia, where she completed her agricultural schooling. In 1965 Irena immigrated to Canada to join her husband, Edward Fetter.
Throughout her life, Irena worked tirelessly and was a dedicated employee of Duracell Canada, then later, Versa Foods at Ford Motor Company. She also worked as a crossing guard with Halton County Schools which she looked forward to each day as she loved interacting with children. Her incredible work ethic and friendly demeanor made her a beloved colleague and friend to many.
Irena was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Fetter, her mother, Bronislawa Malinowska, her father, Stanislaw Malinowski, and her sister, Regina Zurawiecka. She is survived by her daughter, Alexandra (Olenka) Fetter-Zarzeka (Leszek), granddaughters Diana (Zarzeka) Cihlar (Chris) and Daria Zarzeka, and great-grandchildren Emma, Charlotte, and Henry Cihlar. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she loved dearly.
Irena enjoyed travelling. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in particular, held a special place in her heart, and she often travelled to the United States to spend time with them.
Aside from her family, Irena had many passions and talents. She had a beautiful voice and was an active member of Chor Symfonia for many years. She was a gifted singer who loved to perform at various events and concerts.
She also had a creative side, showcasing her talents in crocheting, knitting, and cake decorating. She generously shared her creations with friends and family, often gifting her handmade masterpieces.
Irena was deeply interested in nutrition and the art of cooking. Her talent in the kitchen was evident to all who knew her, and her cooking brought joy and comfort to those around her. In her free time, Irena loved tending to her garden. She found solace in the beauty of nature and was always eager to share her harvest with those around her.
Irena held a deep faith and attended St. Anthony Church until the Covid outbreak, which preceded her diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. She fought the disease gracefully until the end. Though her memory faded, her love for helping people remained steadfast. Irena was a warm and caring individual who always went out of her way to help others. She was always eager to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, whether they were close friends or complete strangers. Many friends were able to be with her until the end, demonstrating the love and admiration she had garnered in her community. Her generosity and kindness will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.
A service will be held at St. Anthony's Church in Oakville, Ontario, on November 17, 2023, at 11 am to celebrate her life. Irena will always be remembered for her warm smile, infectious kindness, and unwavering strength. Throughout her life, she faced many challenges, but never lost her positive outlook on life or her love for her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Irena's final resting place will be at Springcreek Cemetery in Mississauga, where she will be dearly missed but forever remembered for the light she brought into the lives of those who knew her.
Rest in peace, Irena, knowing that you were loved deeply and will never be forgotten.
