Obituary

Died peacefully at the age of 75 on Thursday, May 14th, 2009 at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) following a stroke. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Gillian, and children Anne (Brian MacArthur), Robert, Janet (Alberto Perales) and Stephen (Christine) as well as grandchildren Michael, Kevin, and Kate of Oakville, Alexandra, Megan, and William of Spain, and Luc, Paul, Gabrielle, and Anabelle of England.

Born October 27, 1933 outside London, England and educated at Haileybury College before doing his National Service with the Army in the Suez Canal. He then completed an M.A. in history from Peterhouse College, Cambridge University in 1956. He started his successful career, which was to span over 40 years in the wine and spirits industry, at Harveys of Bristol Limited. On July 22, 1961 he married Gillian Mary Wells and they had four children in quick succession before emigrating to Canada in 1968. For many years Ian worked at Hiram Walker in Windsor, Ontario as a Senior Vice-President. Ian's career came full circle when he was transferred back to England and assumed the role of Managing Director at Harveys and later Chairman of Allied Vintners Limited. Ian retired in the mid 1990's and he and Gillian enjoyed many wonderful years living in both England and France before returning to Canada in 2002. Ian was a devoted family man, an excellent cook and wine connoisseur, and is remembered for his love of reading and travelling, avid interest in current events, and enjoying the finer things in life. He was always such good company.

The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the wonderful and compassionate care Ian received from Carol-Anne Powell in his last year of declining health. We are also indebted to the wonderful nurses in the East Wing of OTMH for making Ian's final days so peaceful. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Ian's memory to Doctors Without Borders Canada (MSF Canada) or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Visitation will take place between 7-9pm on Tuesday, May 19th at Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd. W., Oakville. (905-844-2600). Funeral mass to be held on Wednesday, May 20th, 2009 at 10 am at St. James Parish, 231 Morden Road, Oakville.
