Obituary

Born May 20, 1923, Bill slipped away peacefully in his 89th year at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on December 28, 2011. The son of Swedish parents, John and Anna (nee Anderson) who had immigrated to Canada several years earlier to homestead a land grant on the shores of 'The Lake of the Woods' in Rainy River District (Morson, Ontario), he was their only child. In 1942 Bill enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army as a gunner with the 3rd anti-tank regiment, landing in Normandy on D-day at Juno Beach. He saw action in France, Belgium and Holland before being demobilized in the spring of 1946. While stationed in England, Bill met his wife of 50 years, Margaret (nee Sorby) who pre-deceased him in 1996. They arrived in Canada in 1946, living first in Morson and then Fort Frances before coming to New Toronto (Alderwood) after a two year move to England. Eventually, Bill and family settled in Oakvlle to be closer to the B/A refinery in Clarkson where he worked for 32 years. He is survived by his two children, Karen (Allen) and David, his adored granddaughters Michelle and Jodi (Churchill) and his great-grandsons Ryan and Daniel who will all miss him greatly. A long time resident of the 'West River' community, Bill will be fondly remembered by his many friends and neighbours. A celebration of Bill's life will be held Saturday, January 28th at 1pm at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, (one block east of Kerr, 905-844-2600), Oakville. Donations to the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by his family.
