Obituary

With great sadness, the family of Helena (Helen) Doris Houghton (née Barker), age 91, announce her peaceful passing on August 21, 2026, at Chartwell Oakville Retirement Residence, surrounded by her loving family.

Helen is lovingly remembered by her husband of 69 years, Desmond; her children Greg (Pam), Bruce, and Scott (Mary) Houghton; her grandchildren Brett, Lyndsey, Brian, Amy, Shelby, Patrick, Andrew, and Tim; her great‑grandchildren Desmond and Margo. She was predeceased by her parents, Doris and Edward Barker, her brother Harold, and her sister Vivian Valentine.

Born on May 14, 1935, Helen spent her childhood in Lachute, Quebec. She trained as a registered nurse at Catherine Booth Hospital in Montreal and married the love of her life, Desmond, in 1956. She worked for many years as a ward clerk at Mississauga Hospital. Helen devoted herself to her family and friends and volunteered generously at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. She cherished time at the family cottage and enjoyed skiing, camping, painting landscapes, creating stained glass works of art, and listening to piano and music performed by Desmond, family members, and friends.

The Houghton family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Martiniuk, Dr. Hussain, the compassionate staff at Chartwell Retirement Residence, Canes Community Care and the Ontario Health at Home medical team for their exceptional care and support.

At Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville on Saturday, August 29th, 2026, visitation begins at 10:00 AM, funeral service at 11:00 AM with reception to follow. Interment will be at Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery, Oakville after reception.
