Obituary

Helen Thornton, neé Flynn, born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland on the 3rd of August 1925, died in Oakville, Ontario, Canada on the 27th of November 2014.
Her mother Lizzie Kyle married her father Frank, a WWI veteran. Her husband Jack, who predeceased her by five years, served in WWII. Her own life was one of service too, and love: willingly to God through her Catholic faith, and also to her family: four sons; Brian, Frank, John and Kevin; and two grandsons, Michael and Ian.
In her last years her mind wandered away. It took a while for her family to notice as she could never get our names right anyway, and she would forget the trivial details of life often.
The important things, though, she remembered. She loved her men unconditionally; all five of us, her brother Hugh and her father, and later on her grandsons. She taught us all the importance of family, the necessity of love, and the joy of life.
She was at her most content in the company of her family, and second to that was the sisterhood within the brotherhood of the Knights, both in South Africa and in Canada. The wives and families of the Knights of Da Gama and Columbus were her second family. She said once that if Jack hadn't joined of his own volition she's have booted him in anyway.
From Scotland, she moved to England, Kenya, New Zealand and South Africa before finally coming home to Canada, where we all became proud citizens.
She leaves behind, in addition to her immediate family and friends too many to count her sister-in-law Shirley Flynn and niece Stella, Amanda and her sons the five Griffith grandnephews and families, as well as over 100 cousins, the Kyle clan, on her Mother's side.
May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace…

Funeral Mass will be held 10 am on December 3, 2014 at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 2415 Rebecca Street Oakville. Cremation to follow.
