Obituary

Hedwig (Hedy) Farrer. June 1, 1929 -December 12, 2022.

With considerable sorrow we wish to announce that Hedy, rather suddenly, passed away this week, in her 94th year. In the end, her heart was simply unable to maintain the active and independent lifestyle that she had remarkably managed well into her 10th decade.

Born in the depression, much of Hedy's childhood and early teenage years were during World War II. After the war she was able to take some courses in childhood education and left home to find employment in Switzerland at the age of 18. It was a while later in Bern that she met a young Swiss man just completing his military service who ultimately convinced her to become engaged and emigrate to Canada, where they married upon her arrival in 1953. She and Andreas raised a family and built a Canadian life, first in Montreal and later in Oakville and Burlington.

After Andreas passed away in 2006, Hedy was often seen taking long walks in Millcroft and chatting with virtually every person she passed. She continued to play golf and swim till recently. She enjoyed the kind friendship of her neighbours.

But it was her role as caregiver that she most cherished and in which she excelled, to the benefit of her whole family and often others.

Hedy is survived, sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sons  Alan (Jennifer) and Mark (Siobhan), her daughter Anna (Philip Belec), her grandsons Geoff (Heather), Patrick, Brendan, Liam, Conor, Benjamin and Philippe Jacques and her great grand children Claire and Lucas.

At her request there will be no service and the family will find a number of ways to celebrate her life.
