Obituary

Harold Johnson, husband, father, grandfather, baseball player, coach, salesman and eternally hopeful human passed peacefully on a warm evening on April 14th at the age of 93, after a lengthy battle with throat cancer. Harold handled his life-limiting diagnosis, and treatments the way that he handled most things in life-with grace and perseverance.

Born in Philadelphia on July 31, 1931, Harold was raised by his single mother, Ida-Mae. Growing up without many material possessions he went to work early, supporting his mom and family all the while developing a love for baseball. He spoke especially in his last years of the impact his mom had on him. "She told me to be kind and respectful", sage advice to her impressionable young son who would grow up to be a resilient man.

Harold met Moyra Eagar, his true love and enjoyed a long marriage and fulfilling family life, becoming a beloved grandfather. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Hucca." His connection with them was a significant aspect of his later life.

With his baseball barnstorming behind him he dived into coaching high level ball players in the 1970's in Toronto. He was dedicated to teaching the game he loved to young people and was a big supporter of his children's and grandchildren's activities.

In his later years, Harold took up golf and formed new friendships through the sport. Upon learning of his passing his long-time golf club (Burlington Springs) lowered their flag to half-staff in his honour.

One of Harold's greatest joys was becoming a Canadian citizen, cherishing his life in Canada. Even during his hospitalization, he maintained a positive outlook, expressing gratitude for his life and family.

Harold was a devoted dog dad welcoming, Casey, Casey (2) and rescue, Molly into their home, enjoying countless long walks on the trails.

If you had the opportunity to sit with Harold on an afternoon watching a Jays game, he'd often provide a critique about the game or share a play almost before it happened. A baseball savant.

So many of the messages of condolences note that Harold was well respected, beloved, kind-hearted and resilient. Well, deserved, praise for a man who chose to live intentionally, every day.

As we sat in his room on what was to be his final day, we listened to his favourites, Ella, Sarah and Louis, with Dad resting and gently transitioning. There was a quiet peace in his room and a feeling that everything had been said. So much love exchanged over his lifetime. So many joys, sorrows and life experiences shared. Dad lived never with regret but only hope in a brighter day.

Harold is survived by his wife, Moyra, son, Harold (Joanne) and his daughter, Lynn (Bruce). Grandchildren, Aimee (Osahon), Emily (Andrew) and Sierra (Corey). And great granddaughter, Osayuki. Harold was predeceased by his grandson, Daniel. He leaves behind extended family and friends and his weekly golf partners to rejoice in his long, well lived life.

A gathering is planned for later this summer.
