Guilherme passed away peacefully on March 8, 2016 with his family by his side. He is survived by his beloved wife Linda, his cherished daughters Catherine and Judy along with their husbands Shakil and Martin, and his treasured grandsons Marcus, Ethan, Simon and Craig. Fondly remembered by his sister Maria, brothers-in-law Jose, Richard, Mark, Grant and Morris, sisters-in-law Maria, Angelina, Adelaide, Nancy, Sandra, Lorraine, Helena, Margarida and Eugenia. Often referred to as the "favourite uncle" Guilherme had 15 nephews and nieces in Canada and 9 nephews and nieces in Portugal. He will also be sorely missed by his many friends, including those from the walking club. He is predeceased by his brothers Manuel, Jose, Tomas, Antonio, Miguel, Francisco and Jaime. Guilherme was born in Val Verde, Madelena, Pico, Azores on May 23, 1928 to Tomas da Costa and Maria das Dores (Pereira). His father taught him carpentry and farming. On March 30, 1957 Guilherme immigrated to Canada. He went from never experiencing snow to working as a lumberjack in Watson Lake, BC on the border of the Yukon. Guilherme took great pleasure from helping other people. He sponsored 3 of his brothers and his sister to come to Canada . Guilherme eventually moved to Toronto where he met his wife Linda who was studying nursing at Toronto Western Hospital. They made a life for themselves and their children in Oakville. Guilherme had a long career as a carpenter with the Halton District School Board. He wrote his exams in Canada, becoming a licensed carpenter. He was a cross-country skier, closet cat lover, wine maker and expert gardener. Guilherme played the clarinet in 3 bands including the Oakville Citizens Band. He founded the Oakville Portuguese Philharmonic Band in his basement in 1969. His major passion was the cottage. Situated on beautiful Georgian Bay, Guilherme spent more time outside then inside when he was at the cottage. He was either building something, fixing something, fishing, swimming or boating. Guilherme had great determination. His motto was "Never give up!" Thank you to all those who provided Guilherme with medical care. A special thank you to nurses Ivana and Gordon and PSW Jose for your thoroughness, kindess and respect. Visitation will be held at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road., W. (one block east of Kerr 905-844-2600), Oakville from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2016. Funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 11, 2016 at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, 181 Sewell Drive. Oakville. Interment at Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery.
