Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we share the news Geoffrey Stuart Esmonde Gunn passed away after a brief illness March 16, 2025 at the age of 73.

He will be profoundly missed by his wife, Patricia (Les), sons Geoff (Christine Kilian) and Michael (Bailey Vandebeek) and his four grandchildren Carter, Mason, Hendrix, and Remy. Stuart was always and forever the big brother to his siblings Susan (Thomas Delahooke), Judy (Chris Saunders), Enid (Jim Mackle) and Ian (Yvonne). He will be dearly missed by his siblings and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He is fondly remembered by his mother-in-law Christine Les, sister-in-law Terri Les and brother-in-law Brian Costello. Stuart is predeceased by his parents, Geoffrey and Jocelyn Gunn and his sister Pamela Lynn.

Stuart was born in Toronto. He grew up in Oakville and spent many of his adult years, raising his own family here. Stuart was educated at Oakville Trafalgar High School and McMaster University. He had a successful career as a banking executive and was still serving as a Board Director at Community Trust, part of the Questrade Financial Group.

Stuart was a man with many passions. First and foremost was his love of personal connection, starting with his own family and extending to every single person he met. With his warm, engaging and mischievous personality, his goal was always to leave those he encountered feeling better and with a smile on their face. A conversation with Stuart was never a dull exchange. His inquisitive nature always resulted in a deep discussion about a shared background, a common interest or a topical debate. It never ended quickly but it always included smiles, laughter and a longing for Chapter 2 another day down the road.

Stuart was also extremely passionate about music, sports, history, finance, gardening, travel and learning. Stuart's easygoing nature and quest for knowledge and experience made him an ideal companion on the golf course, curling sheet, card table, outdoor patio or in front of a 60-inch big-screen TV. Stuart also took a lot of pride in mentoring young people. He had a natural ear for music and could pick up a guitar or sit at a piano keyboard for the first time in months and play a tune as though he had been practicing for hours. He was a voracious reader and spent many hours with the Globe and Mail and Wikipedia. World adventure greatly interested Stuart. If he wasn't off with Pat travelling the globe, he was investigating a future cruise, excursion or offering a boat tour of every corner of Go Home Lake coming back to enjoy the view from G&T point.

Stuart touched a lot of lives in his near-74 years and leaves a massive void that can't ever be filled. His legacy of warmth, humour, knowledge and family will carry on in the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing him. The family asks that you honour Stuart's legacy by offering smiles, taking time to engage with strangers and being kind to others. For those who wish to make a donation, the family asks that you continue Stuart's giving legacy to CNIB or McMaster University.
