It is with sadness that we advise you of the passing of Fred W. Oliver, on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, in his 88th year. Fred was born in Brantford Ontario, his family moved to Hamilton in 1930 and to Burlington in 1939. Predeceased by his parents, brother Tom and sister Marge.
Fred joined the army in 1942 and served for four years. He joined the Burlington Police Force in 1946 and served there for just over a year, when he and his brother Tom purchased Deluxe Taxi.
In 1945 he married Kate Harrod and they had four children; Tom, Jill, Judy and Jackie. In 1948, Fred was appointed the Police Chief of Trafalgar Township and when Trafalgar and Oakville amalgamated in 1962 he became Chief of Police in Oakville. In 1986 his wife Kate passed away. In 1954 he founded TOWARF, Town of Oakville Water Air Rescue Force. He served in the Oakville Lions Club for 55 years, Past President, and served as President of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and on several committees of the International Police Chiefs Association. He served on the Board of Govenors of the Royal Canadian Golf Association, the Sheridan College Board, The Oakville Trafalgar Hospital Board, President of the Oakville Senior "A" Hockey Club and Chairman of the Canadian Open.
In 1994 Fred married Irma Repei, the mother of four children; Steve, Judy, Joanne and Erma. He leaves 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He has recently served as Town and Regional Councillor for over 28 years, having served the community in two capacities for over 55 years.
Visitation will be held at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West (one block east of Kerr, 905-844-2600) Oakville, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm Wednesday, February 9, 2011. A Service of Remembrance to celebrate Fred's life will be held 11am Thursday, February 10, 2011 at St. John's United Church, 262 Randall Street, Oakville. In lieu of flowers, donations to TOWARF or Kerr Street Ministries would be appreciated.
