Obituary

It is with incredible sadness that we announce that Faisal Saab passed away suddenly after a brief illness, on Sunday July 3, 2022, surrounded by his family in Oakville, Ontario.

With his passing this world lost a great man. Faisal had a huge heart, which he shared generously with others without hesitation or expectation. He lit up the room with his big smile, and always made others feel welcome and special when they were with him. He loved his dogs, he loved good food (especially sweets), going on adventures both near and far, but most of all he loved his family.

He is survived by his wife, and best friend of 47 years, Lila Saab (nee Ghannam). His greatest accomplishment and biggest legacy was the three children that they raised together and who he loved dearly, along with their partners, Alya Saab (Jason), Ayman Saab (Rachael) and Omar Saab (Lucy). His grandchildren, Yasmeen, Sami, Nadya and Lila were his greatest joy. He was the youngest of nine siblings, and is survived by Hikmat Saab, Najwa Saab, Basma Saraya, Ghazi Saab, Afaf Ammar, and Nazek Khodor. Faisal is predeceased by parents Mahmoud and Adale Saab of Lebanon, and siblings Naif Saab and Elham Seifeddine.

Faisal was born in 1952 in Yanta, Lebanon. He was part of a large and loving family that shaped the strong values and relationships that would endure for a lifetime. In 1972 he moved to Toronto, Ontario. It was while he was completing his degree at the University of Toronto that he met Lila and their love story began. When they married in 1982, he officially joined the Ghannam family and became ubiquitous in all their happy memories.

He built a career in telecommunications that moved him around the world and enabled many adventures for the young couple. When he returned to Canada he settled in Oakville which became his home of nearly 40 years. He began his own business in the export/import industry. He remained interested and involved in advocating for human rights and participating in politics. His focus, however, always and unequivocally was on raising his family. He devoted every ounce of himself to his wife and children. He was the type of father who would perform magic tricks at his kid's birthday parties, invent culinary masterpieces like spaghetti cake, and reluctantly gave in to getting the family's first dog (who he would later jokingly refer to as "his favourite child"). He was the best father and the best husband.

It should not then be any surprise that he ultimately became the very best grandfather too. Anyone who spent time with Faisal in recent years knew that his grandchildren had become his greatest joy. When he wasn't with them, he would be talking about them, or looking at pictures of them, or planning his next walk, Bulk Barn visit, or pancake breakfast with them. You could not spend five minutes talking to Faisal without hearing a story of his grandkids. He took such pride in the family he had built and was especially proud of the being a 'Jiddo' (Grandfather).

He was also a very involved, much loved uncle to his many nieces and nephews. Uncle Faisal was the one his nieces and nephews knew they could come to when they needed guidance, or support during the hard times, or they wanted to share and celebrate something joyful. The love he shared with them was genuine, boundless, and unique in how it was palpable even from afar.

Faisal had much to look forward to, as recent retirement brought about the opportunity for many more adventures with his wife, children and grandchildren. Sadly, time waits for no man, and it is with profound sadness that this next chapter will be written without him beside us, but always with us and forever a part of us.
