March 10, 1934 – May 12, 2023
It is with much sadness that our family announces the passing of our dear dad, Eric Winn on May 12, 2023. Eric is predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Diane (Dot) Winn (2020). He was the loving and supportive father of Keith Winn and Jill MacInnes, father-in-law to Neil MacInnes and Jennifer Ramage, and grandfather to Morgan, Tait and Summer.
Eric was born and raised in Liverpool, England and will be remembered as an adventurous soul and entertaining raconteur, regaling anyone who would listen with stories (often complete with embellishments) of his rambunctious youth and wily capers. He was immensely proud of his time as a flight officer with the Royal Air Force (RAF) where he was awarded the Silver Cup for best all-round student at the RAF Navigational School at the age of 19, and spent four years flying and stationed around the world including Africa and the Middle East. With his usual ambition, determination and adventurous spirit, at the age of 32 he moved his young family to Canada with no waiting job or home, eventually moving up through the ranks in the commercial insurance world and starting his own insurance management company (where he was renowned for his vast knowledge and business acumen), as well as buying and renovating numerous homes throughout Toronto, Mississauga and Oakville. He was a self-taught tradesman and could plan, design, create, build, fix, paint, rewire, plumb, and landscape the heck out of anything (often at 6 a.m. on a Sunday or 6 p.m. while still in suit and tie). He had a passion for Jaguar cars and his driving skills were legendary. He was of extremely generous spirit to all, and even in his later years his inextinguishable sense of fun and mischief never faded, and he remained able to keep up with his grandchildren in jest and play. The family is extremely grateful for the wonderful care and friendship he received at Amica Retirement Home in Bronte.
There will be no visitation or service. However, friends may wish to visit the memorial tree on Fisherman's Wharf in Bronte Harbour, planted in memory of our mother Diane, where a new plaque for Eric will soon be laid. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be welcome. Eric would be most pleased if you raised a glass of your favourite beverage in your favourite local, and shared an anecdote or two in his memory.
