Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth McCarville (nee Daley) on February 5th after a brief illness.   She was in her 98th year.  Predeceased by her husband James McCarville and all her siblings, she remains alive in the hearts of her children and their spouses – Michael (Susie), Mary (Richard), Robert (Diane), and her grandchildren Timothy and Kathryn (Katie), and will be missed by her many nieces, nephews and friends.

Elizabeth loved people, and truly enjoyed friendly stories and conversations with others, both young and old.  Very family oriented, she had great interest and involvement in the lives of her children and grandchildren, whom she talked with nearly every single day, and by whom she will be dearly and greatly missed.

Elizabeth was born April 14, 1926, to George and Catherine Daley, with siblings Leo, Marie, Jimmy, Art and George, in Parkdale, Toronto.  Though a good student, family was everything to Elizabeth, so to help support her family during the Depression Elizabeth started work at the age of 12, and through WWII worked as a machinist in the manufacture of pistol and machine gun barrels.  After the war, Elizabeth went to work at Grand and Toy, became their first woman manager, and sold one of the first ballpoint pens ever in Canada.  She was a founding member of the Holy Family Catholic Youth Organization, where she met James McCarville, and married in 1956.  Happily, their first child, James Jr., followed just after a year later. Sadly, James Jr. died due to natural causes aged four days.  Putting this tragedy aside, Michael, Mary and Robert were born in the decade after. After the children were in secondary school, Elizabeth returned to work at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, where her open and caring style won many lifelong friends and acquaintances. Elizabeth believed in community, and for decades volunteered for many organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and OTMH, for which she was presented the Oakville Senior Citizen of the Year award by Mayor Ann Mulvale in 1998.  For the nearly two decades since, Elizabeth continued to volunteer at the Oakville Fair Share Food Bank, even after she became legally blind.

Throughout her life Elizabeth kept in close contact with her valued parents and siblings, who meant the world to her.

Elizabeth was a good athlete, and won several trophies for bowling.  She also belonged to several card clubs and euchre societies.  Her many hobbies included oil painting and sculpturing, but her passion was dance and music.  She tap danced several times on-stage in her youth, and truly loved all musical theatres and performances.  Even the last day before her illness, she attended Zumba class, and pronounced this to be so enjoyable and so much fun that she couldn't wait for the next one.

Also, Elizabeth wanted to thank the workers and staff at the Vistamere Retirement Residence for their help and courtesy over the last decade, and especially to Joan for being such a good person, a tireless helper and wonderful friend.  She also wished all the residents at Vistamere the very best, too.

Visitation will be held on Monday February 12, 2024 at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville (one block East of Kerr Street) from 10 am to 11am.  Funeral Service to follow in the chapel at 11 am.  Private family interment at Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery.
