IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward Patrick
Karthaus
May 5, 1959 – November 17, 2022
It is with immeasurable sadness that our family announces the passing of our beloved Husband, Father, Pop Pop, Brother, Son, and Uncle: Edward Patrick Karthaus. He passed away on November 17 th , 2022, surrounded by his immediate family. Edward fought his battle with pancreatic cancer with dignity, grace, and optimism until the very end. Since his diagnosis, he was determined to spend his time with his family, cultivating memories and embracing each and every day to the fullest.
He is survived by his wife Lisa Karthaus, son Thomas (Lauren) Karthaus, daughter Alexandra (Iain) Jenkins and daughter Katherine Karthaus, three grandchildren, Laila, Hayden and Finn, mother Rosemarie Karthaus, sisters Mary Beth (John) Williamson and Caroline (Gordon) Ames, brother-in-law Michael (Kim) Kuehne and nephews: Michael, Philip, Patrick, Chris and Sean.
Edward was born May 5 th , 1959, in Toronto Ontario where he grew up with his parents Edward Sr and Rosemarie and sisters Mary Beth and Caroline. For the longest time, it was believed that Ed was the third Edward in his family for which he was given the nickname, Trey. Turns out he was the fourth Edward, but the name Trey stuck for life. From a young age, in true Canadian fashion, he developed a love for hockey that would translate into coaching and would be passed down to his children. He attended St Michael's College School and Nathaniel Hawthorne College in New Hampshire where he played varsity hockey and was selected valedictorian of his graduating class.
Ed and Lisa's love story embodied the true definition of love at first sight. They met in November 1984 in the Bahamas. Fate brought together Lisa, a Jersey girl, and Ed, a Torontonian, while love, loyalty, patience, and faith allowed them to share 38 wonderful years together. Ed saw her from afar and instantly knew that she would be his life partner. Their long-distance love affair consisted of lengthy landline phone calls and weekend trips to see each other until they stood in front of family and friends and vowed to support one another for better or worse, for richer or poorer through sickness and in health. Together, Ed and Lisa created three beautiful children whom they raised with the morals and values their parents had instilled in them.
Ed started his professional career at Xerox Canada in 1984, where he spent five years as a young professional. Over the years, he worked in leadership roles for companies like Oracle as Sales Manager and NCR where he first joined the executive ranks as Vice President and Officer. In 2002, Ed joined Filogix as Executive Vice President of Broker Services and eventually led the sales and marketing division. This role is where Ed began his journey to his induction into the Mortgage Professionals Hall of Fame in October 2022. For the next six and half years, Ed created a legacy and paved the way for what would become the most successful mortgage technology company in Canada. Ed subsequently held a myriad of executive and board roles in technology and innovation companies. But serendipity brought him back to his roots in the mortgage industry as he found himself aligned once again with some of his beloved Filogix family. Ed joined Home Trust as Executive Vice President of Sales in October 2017, and later was appointed Executive Vice President, Residential Lending, Credit Card Division, Renewals and Corporate Marketing. Ed built and mentored some of the most dynamic and respected teams and individuals in the Canadian Mortgage Industry and was revered as one of their most loved leaders.
Ed enjoyed many things in life especially, as anyone who knew him would say, great storytelling. He loved to engage with people, make everyone feel welcome and create any opportunity for laughter. Ed lived his life consistently caring for others and living with integrity which to him meant always doing the right thing even when no one was looking or without seeking praise. The impact Ed had on those in his personal and professional life will carry on for many years to come. His legacy of always being yourself, putting others before himself and leading with love at every turn is how he would want to be remembered.
The family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the team at Princess Margret Hospital for overseeing his treatment and for the incredible team of doctors and nurses at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for his care and comfort management. The support and compassion our family received from the team at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital will never be forgotten as they truly did everything possible for Ed.
