Edith died on September 18 in Oakville, Ontario. Beloved mother of Jennifer Enid Sutherland; adored grandmother of Stewart Andrew Sutherland Wight (Katherine Anderson), Russell Gregory Sutherland Wight, Christine Elizabeth Sutherland Wight (York Chen). Doting great-grandmother of Elena Katherine Wight and Caroline Sherwood Wight. Sister of the late Edwin Hamilton (Marie Hamilton). Survived by sister Emily Frances Hamilton and brother-in-law Ira Walter Sutherland. Edith was born in Isle Maligne, Quebec, 31 August 1925, to Walter Clarence Hamilton and Enid Marguerite Dorey. She received a B.A. from Queen's University in 1946 and taught English and French at St. Helen's School. In 1948 she married John Robert ("Bob") Sutherland and moved to Toronto, where Jennifer was born and she taught French to neighbourhood children in a classroom in their basement. The family lived in North Vancouver, BC, and St. Lambert, QC, before Bob and Edith returned to Toronto in 1973. A reliable alto in the church choir and a lifelong enthusiastic card player, Edith was active in many community organizations: PTA, Toronto Memorial Society, and Oakville IODE, where she oversaw the college scholarship program and volunteered at the Opportunity Shop. Always hungry for knowledge and adventure, she traveled widely and instilled a sense of openness and curiosity in all her family.
