Obituary

Edith Ellen Huhta of Oakville Ontario passed away on Monday July 19 2021, at Allendale Long Term Care Home in Milton Ontario. She was born Edith Ellen Blakeman, in Cobalt Ontario, on March 3 1927, of parents William Alfred Blakeman of St. Paul's Cray in Kent England, and Edith Ellen Cousins of St. Mary's Cray also in Kent. She grew up and attended high school in South Porcupine Ontario where she was a member of the basketball team and where she met her future husband Leo Felix Huhta.

Edith and Leo moved to Toronto and started a family in 1950 with the birth of their first son Neil William John Huhta. After Leo began a career with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, they moved to Etobicoke and had a second son Jeffrey Norman Leo Huhta in 1957. After a short move to Bowmanville Ontario to start a new factory location, the Huhta family returned to Etobicoke in 1965 where Edith was a stay home mother and did volunteer work for the Etobicoke General Hospital until Jeff left home for university. She then took a job as a bookkeeper and paymaster  for Coles Books, then later at Maclean Hunter publishing and broadcasting company.

After achieving a high level of success as an executive at Goodyear, Leo left the company, took a job as a systems engineer for Canada Post, and Edith and Leo spent about 2 years in Vancouver until returning to Ontario and settling in the Glen Abbey neighborhood of Oakville in 1985 where Leo continued to work for Canada Post until retiring at age 65.

Edith lost her beloved Leo when he succumbed to Alzheimers disease at Allendale in 1998. She continued to do volunteer work at the same long term care home and at the Sir John Colburn Senior Center.

Those who knew her enjoyed her positive nature, her selfless attitude, and her love of family.

Edith was a very social person who developed many deep friendships over the years. She loved to entertain, play cards and she travelled all over the world. She was a member of the St. Simon's Anglican church in Oakville and a member of the Red Hats women's club.

Edith is survived by her younger brother Arthur James Blakeman, her two sons and daughter-in-law Carolyn, her grandchildren Matti Davin Huhta, Jeremy Maxwell Huhta, Eric Avalon Harvey Huhta, Jordan Alexander Neil Huhta, Miranda Chloe Rachel Pytka-Huhta, and her great grand child Charles Magnus Wright (son of Matti Huhta and Cameron Wright). She was preceded in death by her older brother William Alfred Blakeman.

Edith was loved greatly and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held on Monday July 26, 2021 at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville (one block East of Kerr Street) from 12 noon until 1 pm.  Funeral Service will take place in the funeral home chapel at 1 pm Monday with interment to follow at Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery.
