Obituary

On December 10 th , Vern Margetts passed away peacefully at the age of 94, surrounded by his family with the assistance of the MAID program after valiantly fighting with deteriorating symptoms of COPD.

He was born Winnipeg Manitoba to Albert and Lexie Margetts. He had 2 siblings preceded in death, Albert Jr and Roslene.

He served in the Canadian Navy from 1953-1969 as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1958 Vern met the love of his life Lois, a nurse in the naval reserve.  They met one evening at a dance party and a year later, married.  Vern was preceded in death by his love Lois after 37 years of marriage.

Vern and Lois shared their love with their adopted children David and Ann. After years of moving from port to port, Vern retired from the Navy in 1969 so that he would be there for his family. The family settled in Scarborough, Ontario. Vern worked 20 years for the Ontario Government on the Management board in Ministry of Health, Education and Social Services.

In 1989 Vern and Lois moved to Oakville Ontario.  In their retirement, Vern and Lois shared their love for travel and adventure, especially going on cruises.  He loved music and dancing with Lois to the song Yellow Bird.  Vern played golf 3 times a week with his friends at Hidden Lake in Burlington and played into his 90's.  Vern especially enjoyed spending time in Shoreham England with his dear friends and relatives.

Vern has a number of accomplishments.  He volunteered at Voice print and worked as a Marshall at the Canadian open at Glen Abbey Golf Course.  He also had a flair for baking, was a voracious reader of history and the sciences and loved to build model ships.

Some of Vern's Favorite sayings:

  • Life is to be lived
  • Life will unfold as it should
  • Better than a slap in the belly with a wet fish
  • I am replete

He was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by his son Dave, Daughter Ann and Daughter in law Rhondda.

A special thank you to the staff at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, the staff at Amica Bronte Harbour, Dr Pyle and Nurses at the MAID program who took such great care of him.
