Duncan passed away peacefully in Oakville on February 18th, 2022 with his wife by his side and with his family close by. The family had the good fortune of spending many quality months together, most days filled with good conversation, talk of politics, afternoons in the sun, spicy curry dinners and plenty of laughter.
Duncan Richard D'Souza was born on April 3, 1935 in Chittigong, India, to Mr. James D'Souza and Mrs. Clara Fernandes. He spent his childhood in India, notable middle school years with his brother Denzil at Goethals Memorial (Catholic) College, between Nepal and Bhutan in the Himalayas. He was a very gifted athlete, playing field hockey, cricket, soccer and track and field disciplines amongst others. He was captain of many sports teams during these years, even winning a holiday for his school by his play on the cricket pitch.
At the age of 17, Duncan departed by ship to England to begin his next phase of life. After two years of Mechanical Engineering at University in Manchester, he was called to the Royal Air Force, where he worked as a Radar Technician servicing military aircraft in England, Singapore, Beirut and the Middle East. He was also a certified rifle marksman. After his tour in the RAF, he entered the workforce and specialized in mechanics and tool & die making at Mullards Electronics in Croydon, and later completed his Ordinary National Certificate in Engineering.
During his time in Croydon, he met his future wife Theresa, the sister of Noel, one of his closest friends. She was 17 and he 25. Their 62 year love affair began, with a wedding following after one and a half years of courtship, and a relocation to Manchester England. An application to emigrate to Canada was completed, and a short time later, Duncan was off by ship on a solo mission to establish roots for his wife and two young daughters, Deborah and Natalie.
In Toronto, he began work at deHavilland Aircraft as a machinist, and eventually was reunited six weeks later with his 'girls'. He later moved his skills to Massey Ferguson and continued to further his education, this round focusing his efforts on draftsmanship. He found work as a draftsman at Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) in Mississauga, where he would then relocate from the big city to sleepy life found in Oakville, his home of 50+ years.
Duncan was a wonderful man, his family and their health and well-being, was always his and his wife's top priority. He loved his quality time spent with them, as well as hours and days playing sports, soccer, but mostly with racquets on the table tennis table and of course at Bronte Tennis Club, Wallace Park and Ontario Racquets Club. He enjoyed teaching his girls how to play sports, and soon after had two boys, Roberto and Damian, which he would take under his wing. Deborah's highschool sweetheart from her summer in Chicoutimi, Quebec, brought Denis into the family mix, and a special bond was created that lasted a lifetime.
His children were his passion, and his daughters brought five precious grandchildren into his life: Julien, Victoria, Devon, Talia and Noemi. He had the joy of having all of his grandchildren live with him and Theresa, for summers and for longer stays. One of his most heart-felt moments was meeting his great-grandchild Emerson, son of Devon and Kylisha.
Duncan loved Canada passionately, he also loved to travel. With Theresa, a love for Cruising was discovered - especially trans-atlantic crossings - and somewhere north of 35 trips were completed in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, as a couple, with family and friends. Somewhere around one and a half years of his mortal life were spent at sea. Theresa and Duncan enjoyed home ownership in England (Hastings) and many seasons were spent enjoying life along Channel on the Southern Coast from Brighton to Dover. The most special of these trips were when cruises were connected to long stays at their flat.
Duncan is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Theresa, his daughter and son-in-law and two sons, five grandchildren and great grandson. He was looking forward to reuniting in Heaven with his pre-deceased (2017) daughter Natalie.
