IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Douglas (Doug)
Laidlaw Gates
July 31, 1947 – April 27, 2018
With profound sorrow we announce the passing of our dearest husband, father and Poppa. Doug was the deeply cherished husband of Sue (Brown), loved and loving father of Rob (Janet Lo) and Laura (Aaron Brox), and the proud, loving Poppa of Charlotte Rose and Evelyn Grace Brox. He is also survived by his brother, Gord. Doug was a positive, happy and unfailingly optimistic person. He was loving, giving, kind to all and a true gentleman.
He bravely fought a seven year struggle with lymphoma, remaining positive and strong to the end, despite many difficult treatments. An inspiration to all who knew him, Doug never lost his eternal optimism, remaining relaxed, and loving life to the end. We will all miss his offbeat sense of humour, his gentle kindness, and patient, caring guidance. Doug believed in helping and serving, devoting his long career to the Civil Service. He practiced municipal law for 31 years at the Town of Oakville, 23 as Town Solicitor. He also sat on the Ontario Municipal Board, and was a legal advisor at the Region of Peel for 3 years. His passion was golf. He loved spending time with his beloved family, dogs, and his many friends. Doug loved music, boating, fishing and most of all, enjoyed every minute spent at the cottage from May to November almost every year. We express our deep thanks for the wonderful and devoted care of Dr. V. Kukreti for seven years at Princess Margaret Cancer Center, and for Doug's clinical trials nurse, Ruth Turner. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 1 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home at 64 Lakeshore Rd. W., in Oakville. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Wed. May 2, at St. Jude's Anglican Church, 160 William St., in Oakville. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, or any charity of your choice.Visitation
