Doug Gillham, a beloved native of Ottawa, peacefully passed away at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on January 3, 2024, at the age of 93.
Predeceased by his parents Harper Caulfield Gillham & Ada Victoria Gillespie, his brother Robert Gillespie Gillham, and his daughter-in-law Lori Ann Gillham (nee Ho Wong). Doug is survived by his devoted wife Elizabeth "Liz" (nee Ross); his son Mark (Liz Zochowski); his daughter Susan (Don Mitchell); his son Grant (Marcelle Chahine); and his son Jeff (Nancy Fraser). Doug will be lovingly remembered by his eleven grandchildren Lindsay, Matthew, Michelle, Ashley, Kyle, Nathan, Katie, Griffin, Andrew, Alice, Max; seven great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
A graduate with a Bachelor of Science from Carleton University, Doug was not only an academic but also a multi-sport athlete. After graduation, he married the love of his life in 1955, and together they shared 68 years of marriage, residing in Oakville for 58 years.
Most of Doug's career was at A.E. Staley, where he managed the Canadian operations. He was an active member of St. Paul's United Church in Oakville for over 50 years, and his passion for supporting various charities as a volunteer was evident throughout his life. He was part of a walker group founded by Robert Yorke, where he built many wonderful friendships over the years.
Doug was an avid traveler, touring around the world with his granddaughter Michelle as part of the US Jr. National Association Tennis Team.
The cottage at Kahshe Lake and the ski home in Ellicottville, NY, provided some of Doug's fondest memories with family and friends.
For nearly two decades, Doug stood as a pillar of strength, supporting Liz through her battle with dementia at their home. His dedication earned him recognition as a champion for dementia care awareness.
The family expresses gratitude to the staff at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Dr. Roland Amolins for their care and attention.
A private family service and interment will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Patty's Place - Acclaim Health Dementia Care Centre or St. Paul's United Church Memorial Fund.
