IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Debbie Shallhorn
King
December 18, 1953 – April 26, 2022
It is with sadness that the family of Debbie Shallhorn King announces her passing on Tuesday, April 26th 2022, at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
Debbie was the first daughter born to John and Marilyn Shallhorn on December 18, 1953 in Toronto, ON. Growing up, Debbie spent her childhood living both in Toronto, ON, London, ON, Richmond, BC and Markham, ON as her father's career moved their family around the country. It was during this time when she developed an appreciation of the beauty found in Canada's natural spaces, which led her to spend many days every year with her family at her parent's cottage in Muskoka.
She was an avid learner throughout her life and pursued a career in journalism at The Globe and Mail, where she worked primarily as an editor for many years. Debbie took great pride in her work, especially the work she did within the Globe's sports department. Her sports fandom was a large part of her identity, and she cheered passionately for her favourite teams: The Toronto Argonauts, New York Yankees, and, most of all, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Debbie was best known to her friends and family for her many passions: giving to charity, swimming, puzzles, sports, and a love of animals. She spent many of her adult years raising rescue dogs and supporting various charitable causes around animal rescue and protection.
Debbie got married in August 1979 to her husband Andrew, enjoying more than 40 years of marriage together, raising two kids and many dogs (that were always a Labrador variety). After losing her husband in March of 2020, Debbie carried on without him for the next two years, and will be buried with his remains as was her wish.
Debbie is survived by her mother Marilyn, sisters Cathy, Linda, and Jackie, sons Christopher (Kristen) and Nathan, and grandchildren William and Emily.
As per Debbie's wishes, no memorial service will be held. If folks would like to honour her memory, donations to the Oakville Humane Society or Diabetes Canada would be appreciated.
