IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Daphne Doreen
Thomas (Nee Shuffell)
May 3, 1923 – November 12, 2016
Passed away peacefully in her bed on Nov 12, 2016 in Oakville, Ontario. Daphne joins her beloved Chris (1921-1987) and is survived by sons Richard (Alison) and Graham and her grandchildren William and Lauren.
Daphne was born in Thornton Heath, Croydon, London, England on May 3, 1923. As a young girl she enjoyed dancing and sports. Growing up in wartime Britain, Daphne and her family were evacuated from London after their house was bombed and they lived on her father's boat for several months until they found new accommodation.
Daphne met Chris at an amateur theatre production in 1948 and they married the following year. They immigrated to Canada in 1957 with her young family to start a new life in Canada. The family relocated several times with stops in Toronto, Simcoe, and Montreal, back to Toronto, St. Catharines, Hamilton, Vancouver and Oakville.
For many years Daphne worked tirelessly as a volunteer for the Oakville Opera Guild and the Erchless Estate Museum. She will be missed by her family and many friends. Also Daphne took an avid interest in the town of Oakville and very often she would spend many a lunch and dinner in the dining room of Trafalgar Lodge chatting and laughing with friends. She had a feisty, determined outlook on life and was always quick with jokes, comments and opinions. Her greatest joy was her family and in her personal life she especially enjoyed gardening, painting, art history, and opera. As a book lover, she could be often found perusing the shelves of the local bookseller.
In later years, Daphne took up golf, badminton and bridge and could often be found leaping for the birdie at the Sir John Colburne Centre in Oakville. She enjoyed travelling, especially back to Britain to visit family, but Daphne always considered a trip to Israel to be her favorite.
Her family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Wyndham Manor LTC for their excellent care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted at Autism Ontario http://www.autismontario.com/
A celebration service of Daphne's life will be held on Saturday November 19, 2016. Visitation is at 1:00 PM and service at 2:00 PM with refreshments afterwards in the lounge of the Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home, Oakville, Ontario.
