In his 90 th year, Daniel Joseph Kelly, passed peacefully at the Post Inn Village Long Term Care Home on Aug 18/21. He was surrounded by many loving family members the night before he passed and will be greatly missed by all of them.
Dan's focus has always been his family; his six children, his fifteen beautiful grandchildren and his four adorable great-grandchildren. There is never a dull moment at family gatherings. Loads of love, laughter and silliness always ensues and he treasured these events deeply. In his children's youth, he was a regular attendee at all of Oakville's hockey arenas, baseball diamonds and soccer fields. This unwavering dedication to his family's sporting pursuits continued with his grandchildren. He was always there to cheer them on and to constantly show them how proud he was of them. Win or lose, he was always a supportive fan. He was even a supportive fan to his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. Oh, how we all wished and prayed that TML would win a Stanley Cup before he passed. Unfortunately, that was not the case but he never gave up cheering for them to the very end (and loudly at that). There were always multiple shouts of "Shoot the puck" screamed at the TV on game nights.
He was incredibly proud of his entire family and drew strength from that until the end. He instilled a sense of consideration, fairness and an incredible work ethic to his entire family from a very young age and we are all better people for it. Dad was also very patriotic, always flying the Canadian flag where ever he went. From the east coast to the west coast of Canada, he explored and visited many parts of Canada and revelled in all of those experiences whole-heartedly. He also loved to travel outside of Canada too including Florida, Portugal, Ireland, Hawaii, etc. He had many exciting stories to tell about each experience, the people he met and the places he'd seen.
Dan also was extremely proud of his roots from his home province of Prince Edward Island! When first meeting Dan Kelly - - it wouldn't take very long to find out that he was "an Islander" and proud of it! No matter where he was or who he was with, he always represented his beloved PEI very well.
Every summer he would load up his car with Ann and all 6 kids (not a seatbelt in sight at that time), and he would drive from Ontario to PEI to spend a glorious holiday at our cottage in Glen Finnan and then in later years at mom and dad's cottage in Rocky Point, PEI. He was committed to ensuring that the summer's agenda included lots of fun and exciting activities for his six children including: deep sea fishing, go-carting, attending the horse races, Anne of Green Gables, barn dances, strawberry picking and breathtakingly beautiful red-soil beach days. Of course, one of the highlights of these yearly trips for him and for his kids was hosting social gatherings at the cottage for many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Family was supremely important to him and he passed this tradition onto his children who continue his legacy and make PEI and family a priority.
Dan Kelly was the dear husband of Ann (nee Callaghan) Kelly. Loving father to Brian (Lisa), Colleen (Paul), Mark (Donna), Bruce (Mary), Kevin (Nancy), (predeceased by John Joseph) and Shawn (Lisa La). He was the grandfather to his much-loved grandchildren: Conor, Rory, Brett, Kelly, Kate, Dylan, Jessica, Emma, Jack, Liam, predeceased by Daniel, Patrick, Aidan, Spencer and Emily. And the apple of his eye - - his great grandchildren Colin, Callie, Jessie and Owen.
We gain much comfort from the knowledge that Dan is in a better place and raising a glass surrounded by all his family and friends that have gone before him.
