Obituary

October 28, 1952 – April 19, 2022

Peacefully and surrounded by family, Daniel George Gilpin passed away after a short period of illness on Tuesday, April 19th at the age of 69 years.

Dan will be lovingly remembered by his wife (of 35 years), Donalee Forbes, of Oakville, stepson, Daniel Holland of Toronto, and sister-in-law, Johanne Ramsey of Charleston, South Carolina, as well as numerous friends and business associates.

Dan will also be dearly missed by many close friends from Toronto's St. Lawrence Antique Market, a community both Dan and Donalee have been part of for 17 years.

Dan is predeceased by his mother, Katherine Gilpin (nee Butler), and father John Gilpin.

Born in Toronto, Dan migrated with his family to spend his early childhood in Fort Nelson, British Columbia. Returning in his early teens to the family's traditional community of Shelburne in Central Ontario. In his 20s, Dan enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Reserves, stationed in Edmonton, Alberta. Returning to Toronto in the early 1980s, Dan began working in shipping transportation with Federal Van Lines, eventually moving on to North American Van Lines.

In 1986, the stars aligned and Dan was fortunate to meet Donalee Forbes, who he would spend the next 35 years of his life with at their home in Oakville. Dan and Donalee were not only life partners, but struck out as business partners to launch cross-border shipping service, Case Transportation, and Oakville Used Furniture and Antiques on Kerr Street, which served the local community for 10 years through the 1990s.

In his later years, and still together with Donalee, Dan remained active as an antiques reseller at several Southern Ontario trade markets, but primarily the St. Lawrence Antique Market in Toronto.
