IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Colin
Craven
September 20, 1936 – January 15, 2024
Colin was born 20 September 1936 in Radcliffe, Lancashire, England. He was predeceased by his wife Ann & his brothers Robert, Cecil & Fred. He is survived by his children John (Janet), Jane and Andy, & by his grandchild Jess. He is dearly remembered by his sister, Irene, of Ingersoll ON, & his many nieces & nephews & their families in Canada & the United Kingdom. He was especially close to his niece, Christine, who was actively involved in his care for the last 2 years of his life.
Colin attended Bury Grammar School & Radcliffe Secondary Modern School. Due to the family's limited finances he left school at 15, working as an apprentice & attending night school for engineering at Bolton Technical College & University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology.
He met Ann (nee Shackleton) while the two attended Bury Grammar School. They were married in September 1961, bought a house in Ramsbottom & had two children (John & Jane) in quick succession. Shortly thereafter, they boarded the Empress of Canada (October 1966), emigrating to Canada, where Andy was born. Colin & Ann enjoyed travel & cruises to places they could only have imagined going when they were children (including Egypt, Turkey, Alaska, the Caribbean, Scandinavia, and Russia). Their travels continued up to Ann's illness & untimely death following detection & treatment for breast cancer. Colin cared for her in their home until the very end.
Colin was well-known for his solid work ethic. During his career he worked for: Johnson Controls, Hoke Controls, & was Senior Sales Manager at Vacusan, General Electric Company of Canada (GEC UK) & Arrow Speed Control. He was also known for his wry sense of humour, his love of storytelling (with that twinkle in his eye), and his adventurous spirit - including walking the Edgewalk at the CN Tower for his 75th birthday !
Having played semi-professional soccer in England, Colin was enthusiastic to coach his childrens' soccer teams in both West Hill & Oakville. He could still dazzle with his fancy footwork into his 60s & had a lifelong enthusiasm for the beautiful game. In midlife he played tennis, took up downhill & cross-country skiing, became addicted to golf & participated in sailboat races, crewing with John Harvey on the Gunner's Mate. In addition, he had a great love for theatre, performing in plays and musicals in Radcliffe, Toronto & Oakville. A shared love of Gilbert & Sullivan was a strong bond between Ann & Colin, started perhaps when, as teenagers, they performed together in the Mikado & HMS Pinafore.
Colin was a longtime member of St. Jude's Anglican Church in Oakville, and spent many years singing in the choir, volunteering as a Server & Reader, and in later years serving on the Gardening Guild.
The family is grateful to Joyce for the love & companionship she & Colin enjoyed while Colin resided at The Kensington Retirement Home. The family would also like to recognize the staff at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for their kindness, respect & care.
According to his wishes, Colin's remains will be cremated; the ashes will be placed in the garden at St. Jude's Anglican Church, Oakville. A celebration of life will be scheduled for spring 2024. In lieu of flowers donations to St Jude's Garden Guild or Halton Women's Place would be appreciated.
