Larry Bowen passed away suddenly but peacefully on September 28 th at home in Oakville, Ontario. In his 76 th year, Larry leaves behind his loving wife of over 50 years, Susan (nee Sinclair), son Michael Bowen (Mimi Grba) of Toronto; daughter Kirsten Jones (Aaron) and grandchildren Lucas and Dylan Jones of Seattle, Washington; brothers-in-law David (Pat) Sinclair of Ottawa and Geoffrey Sinclair (deceased).
Born in England to Jacqueline and Raymond Bowen (both deceased) he immigrated to Canada as a toddler. He proudly served with the Royal Canadian Regiment from 1965 until his retirement in 1997, having risen to the rank of Colonel. He also served with the Canadian Airborne Regiment in Edmonton, Alberta.
Larry's Canadian Forces career took him all over North America and Europe where he held positions in NATO, serving as the Director of NATO Composite Force in Oslo, Norway and Chief of Staff Allied Command Europe Mobile Force Land in Germany. He served twice as Defence Attaché, once at the Canadian Embassy in Moscow in the former USSR and again at the Gulf Cooperation Council states, (including Yemen) based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Since his retirement, Larry has worked as a consultant for government departments both in Canada and the United States, specializing in exercise development and training. For example, he was the lead exercise developer and coordinator to validate processes and procedures for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics working with various agencies and organizations in support of the RCMP and other government organizations at the municipal, provincial and federal levels.
Larry Bowen's exceptional life will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 16 th , 2018, at St. Jude's Anglican Church in Oakville, ON., at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Larry's name to the JOY Foundation, in care of The Oakville Community Foundation, would be greatly appreciated.
