IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carol Ann
Prince
August 14, 1937 – January 15, 2024
It is with great sadness that we share that Carol passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on January 15, 2024. She was 86 years old. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Ross, her two children, Ian and Andrea, and their respective spouses, Brynn and Bruce, her three beloved grandchildren, Tira & Tess Durrell and Adelaide Prince and also her niece, nephew and great nieces, Gail & David Prince and Katie & Emily Neame. As the center of our family, she will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Carol was born on August 14,1937 to Helen Tatro Reid (Howard) and Hunter Thomas Reid in Hamilton Ontario. Her brother Bruce joined them in 1939.
Carol grew up in Oakville and attended Brantwood School, Old Central School and Oakville Trafalgar High School (OTHS), graduating in the class of 1956. She lived close to the school in a red brick house and loved having her American grandparents living with her family during her high school years. The family enjoyed summers in Cape Cod with her cousins at her American grandparents' summer home.
Carol graduated from Toronto Western Hospital in the class of 1960 from nursing science at Queens University in the class of 1961 where she won the gold medal in nursing. She was a public health nurse at the Scarborough health unit from 1961-65.
Carol met her beloved husband, William 'Ross' Prince in 1959 while he was a junior intern at Toronto Western Hospital. They married in 1961 and moved to Oakville in 1965. Ross began a career in Urology at OTMH, and Carol managed the business. They purchased their current home in 1967 and moved in with one bean bag chair and burlap curtains!
They welcomed their son Ian in 1968 and daughter Andrea in 1970.
After Carol's father passed, her mother married Walter Howard in 1978. Carol and family enjoyed a wonderful relationship with Walter and his family, including his children.
Carol had many wonderful friends and connections who were very important to her. Two of her bridesmaids were former Queens nursing students who also raised their families in Oakville. She participated in Oakville Maycourt and in 1989 a group of women began meeting weekly to make ornaments for a Christmas tree that was raffled off with proceeds going to VON nurses. Starting as a craft group, they continued to meet and evolved into a weekly Mahjong group. Carol also had a weekly bridge group she met with for decades. There was so much love, joy and deep respect around all of these ladies.
Carol and Ross enjoyed their life in Oakville, the great outdoors and were avid travelers. They joined Alpine Ski Club in 1970 which led to their beloved Alpine / Craigleith Clinic Ski Gang. These friendships lasted their lifetimes and extended across multiple families and generations. Raising their kids included extended canoe trips and camping in Algonquin and Killarney, summers at a friend's cottage in Belle Bay and international yearly ski trips with friends. As empty nesters, they traveled even more. They skied the Alps, had many European riverboat 'Cousin Cruises' (her brother and his wife and their American cousins), Safaris in Africa, travel in China, Russia, South America, Morocco, Australia. One of Carol's favorite trips was the African Safari in Botswana. Ross & Carol loved golf, and for many years holidayed in Myrtle Beach and Arizona with friends.
Carol was adored by her family and loved spending time with her kids and precious grandchildren, who lived in Denver, CO and Squamish, BC. They shared cruises, trips to Mexico resorts and she had many visits to Denver over the years, which sadly stopped in 2019 with her latest cancer diagnosis. In 2013, the Prince family started a tradition of meeting for a week in July at an Ontario Resort (Bayview Wildwood Resort). This became an annual highlight for the extended Prince family, including her kids, grandkids, and her niece and nephew (Gail & David) and her two 'bonus grandkids', her great nieces, Katie & Emilly Neame. Carol's brother and family also joined in on the fun in recent years. Bayview was a special week full of family, card games, water activities, more card games, scooter races, poutine, ice cream, eating and quality family time especially with her granddaughters.
Carol embraced being a Prince and the love of frogs! (Before you meet a handsome Prince…) She collected frog statues, stuffed animals, shirts, calendars, socks, scrub tops, you name it. The frog theme continues to bring much laughter and joy to the entire Prince family.
Carol had endured many health issues over the years, including overcoming cancer three times, living with cancer and two hip replacements. Her passing comes as a shock to her loved ones as she had overcome so much over the years, we had come to believe she was invincible. She has left a huge hole in all of the lives she touched.
A Celebration of Life is planned for July 26th at 1pm in Oakville. Contact andreadurrell@gmail.com for information
Flowers are respectfully declined. Donations can be made to the Breast Cancer Society.
Please think of Carol when you see frogs.
