IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Brenda
Mackay
September 1, 1943 – September 4, 2022
Surrounded by family, Brenda passed away peacefully in the afternoon on Sunday, September 4th, 2022. Devoted wife to John for almost 58 years, and a loving mother to Kari (Dave Scott) and John Jr. (Terri Szego). Brenda was the proud, loving grandmother to Spencer and Harry Scott, and Rhys, Luke and Molly MacKay.
Brenda was born and raised in Brampton, Ontario, to Jim and Eveline Calvert. She was predeceased by her younger brother, John Calvert, but remained very close to her older sister Marlene Driscoll, her brother Jim Calvert, sister Susan Gordon and many cousins, throughout her life.
Brenda graduated from the physiotherapy program at the University of Toronto, in 1964, the same year she married John. Although Oakville has been their home for most of their marriage, their adventure together took them to places all over the world, but she was most fascinated by her home country, Canada. Her final trip, just months ago, was up the northwest coast of British Columbia.
Brenda was an avid reader, and a life-long student of history, politics and literature. Years after having her children, she returned to UofT to complete an honours degree in history and political science, and she will be remembered for her unprompted and detailed historical lectures, the passion and love she had for her work as a docent at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and her years-long involvement in campaigning for Liberal candidates at all levels of government. She also took great pride in her crafts, especially quilting. Each of her grandchildren are the beneficiaries of her thoughtful and personalized work, with quilts of their own, completed for each child after Brenda had some time to get to know them. Her final masterful creation sat on her sewing table on Sunday.
Brenda was honest, caring and brave. She will be forever remembered as a loyal friend, a loving wife, and a perfect mother.
Her family is grateful for the care she received from the medical experts at Sunnybrook Hospital. She was profoundly impressed, and comforted, by Dr. Higgins, Dr. Petrella, and Dr. Huynh. In her final chapter of her life, she knew that she was being cared for by the very best. From all of us, thank you.
Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Brenda's life from 1-4pm on September 21, at The Oakville Club (with remarks at 2 pm).
In lieu of flowers, Brenda asked that donations be made to the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital and/or Dying with Dignity Canada.
