Peacefully and surrounded by love, at the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, on Wednesday March 5, 2014, Margaret Betty Millicent Gentle Nancekivell in her 92nd year. Betty was the beloved mother of the Reverend Canon Marni Nancekivell and Ralph W. Malashevsky. She was the loving and doting grandmother of Amanda Malashevsky. Much beloved wife of the late Hugh Archer Nancekivell of Hamilton, Ontario (1989). She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Margaret Gentle, of Burlington and Eleanor Nancekivell of Thunder Bay. She leaves behind as well, her cousins, Bev Haskins of Beamsville, Ontario and Margaret Hannah of British Columbia. Those who also mourn Betty's death include a host of nephews and nieces from Ontario, all of whom expressed their love for her during her brief hospitalization. Betty was born in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1922, the daughter of the late William Gentle, and his wife, Marion Ridding Gentle, and was the sister of the late (Reverend) Stanley W. Gentle. Betty was also the "honorary mother" of the late Barbara Lillywhite and of her husband Derek, and their children John Lillywhite and Catherine Dixon. For the past three years Betty resided at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Oakville, Ontario where she formed a special bond with Sox the cat and Theo, the family Schnoodle with whom she shared marmalade and toast each morning as she enjoyed her first cup of tea of the day. The family will receive friends at St. Christopher's Anglican Church, 662 Guelph Line, Burlington, Ontario on Sunday, March 9 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm and from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. A celebration of Betty's life will be held at St. Christopher's Anglican Church on Monday, March 10 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow at the church. Interment will take place at Woodland Cemetery at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. Betty loved flowers and they will be accepted with gratitude. However, the family also requests donations to St. Christopher's Anglican Church, Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, or the charity of your choice. In her prime, Betty volunteered with the Red Cross and the Canadian Cancer Society, and held a variety of positions and served on committees within the Anglican Diocese of Niagara. She was a life member of the Women's Auxiliary and a member of the I.O.D.E. Betty was deeply proud to have been awarded the Order of Niagara by the Bishop of Niagara in recognition of her contributions to diocesan life. In the past few years, she spoke frequently of the importance of a life of service to the community. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Sheilagh House of Oakville, Dr. Ian Darcel of Burlington and Dr. Fournazier of Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital. We especially want to thank Cora, Betty's PSW from the CCAC, for her exceptional care for Betty. Cora's visits while Betty was at home were the high point of her week. Thanks to the Emergency Room staff at Joseph Brant, along with the nursing staff on 5 West, who cared for her with tenderness. The Venerable Stephen Hopkins and the Reverend Sue Nicolls haved supported Betty and her family with care for the spirit, for which we thank them. Immeasurable thanks to Betty's faithful friends who walked with her in the past years, and who enriched her life.
