Obituary

We are sad to announce the passing of Joan Elizabeth McCormick (née Cardwell). Known as Beth to friends and family, she was the epitome of grace and resilience.

Beth was a long-time employee of the Ontario Public Service. She started in the mail room in high school and proved to be a great manager with large teams at the Family Responsibility Office, Queen's Park and Downsview.

She met the love of her life, Les McCormick in 1979.  They were married in 1980, travelled to Italy for their honeymoon and spent many summers in Cape Cod enjoying concerts, dining out, shopping and watching tennis.

Beth was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome in later life having spent years dealing with chronic pain and fatigue.  It forced her to retire early but allowed her to develop a new hobby: making glass beads. She spent many hours in her garage studio trying out new techniques and developed deep friendships with people from all over the world through online chat groups.

She lost Les in 2020 during Covid but soldiered on, continuing to have lunch with friends and former colleagues and visits with her children and grandchildren.  She was so proud when her oldest grandson Jacob married Sara in 2022.

Beth leaves her brother, David, her daughters, Laura (Nolan) and Katherine (Rob), her grandchildren, Jacob (Sara), James (Casey) and Madeline, her nephew, Michael, her nieces Jennifer (Rob) and Christine (Phil), her Goddaughter, Elizabeth (Jamie) and her very best friend, Allisan.  She was predeceased by her sister, Judith.

There will be a memorial service at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville on Friday May 16 at 1pm followed by a reception.  The family will receive visitors prior to the service from 11am to 1pm.

We ask that rather than flowers, a donation be made in Beth's honour to the Goodhope EDS Clinic, the first EDS research clinic in Canada.
