Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father Arthur Birchenough after‎ a courageous battle with cancer at Ian Anderson House in Oakville on September 11, 2016. He was in his 77th year and surrounded by his wife and children. Loving wife and best friend of Lois, father of Jim (Xochitl), Don (Anne), Brian (Caroline) and Nancy (Kevin), and grandfather to Claire, Matthew, Caitlin, Mitchell, John Michael, Thomas, Jack, Ella, Lauren, Trevor, James, Katherine, Tegan and Keira. Also survived by brothers Don and Bob and sister Carole. A graduate of ‎McGill University in Electrical Engineering, Art worked for 37 years in engineering construction as the CEO of Canatom Inc., President and Chief Operating Officer of Monenco Inc. and Vice Chairman of Agra Monenco, working on major energy and infrastructure projects in over 60 countries. Past President of the Energy Council of Canada and Vice Chairman of the World Energy Council, Art served on many boards, committees and councils, including as a Senior advisor to Sheridan‎ College in Oakville and campaign chairman for the United Way of Oakville. Art is best remembered for his passion in sport, as an athlete, coach and organizer. As a star football player at Rosemount High School and McGill University and minor league baseball player for the Montreal Royals, Art was well regarded in the Montreal sports community. He coached nearly every team that his kids played on across baseball and hockey, and became a top official within Swimming Canada as the Vice President of the Quebec Swimming Federation, and President of the Organizing Committee for the 1988 Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials‎. A service to celebrate a truly remarkable life will be held at Kopriva Ta‎ylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior on Wednesday, September 14.
