November 6, 1921 – March 8, 2015
On March 8, a kind and gentle man went to be with his Lord. Archie is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty, his five children William, Robert (Judy), Jean (Lynn), Mary (Rodger) and Gordon (David), his grandchildren Claire, Heather, Brendan, Cheryl and Sarah, and several nieces and nephews; he is predeceased by his sister, Jean, and parents Edward and Jean.
Archie grew up in Port Arthur, ON and graduated from Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto in 1948, his studies interrupted by five years of war service in Italy, France and Greece as part of an anti-aircraft regiment and as a paratrooper. His career in petroleum refining included employment in Britain after graduation, Shell's Montreal East Refinery where he met and married Betty in 1953, the Irving Oil Refinery in Saint John, NB, Great Canadian Oil Sands in Fort McMurray, AB, the BP Oil R efinery in Oakville, and finally, the Petromin Oil Refinery in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. After retirement to Oakville in 1984, Archie reassumed his duties as an elder and member of Hopedale Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed gardening, reading, listening to Beethoven, and playing bridge.
A funeral to commemorate Archie's life will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville (one block east of Kerr 905-844-2600) with visitation taking place one hour prior. Burial at St. Jude's Cemetery, Oakville. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
