Obituary

After a life extremely well lived, Albertus (Ab) of Oakville died peacefully in his sleep. He leaves to mourn Maria (Riet), his loving wife of 67 years.  He will be profoundly missed by his children and their spouses: Dan (Daphne), Joan Poulton (Tony), Jackie (Adwin Jansen).  He is survived by 9 cherished grandchildren, who he bragged about unashamedly to his friends: Megan, Garrett, Natalie and Morgan Aleven, Victoria and Keegan Poulton, Andrea, Diana and Natasha Jansen.  He loved and was loved by his family.

Ab lived a long and fulfilling life.  His formative years were spent in the war torn Netherlands.  In 1954, after completing college and mandatory military service, he and his new bride emigrated to Canada. Ab and Riet were partners in love, adventure, business and fun.  His love affair with Canada in particular and geography in general, saw them set up residences in BC, ON, NF and Arizona.

Ab was a zealous entrepreneur.  His passion was footwear.  He was the founder of The Terra Group of Companies, often referred to as his fourth child.  Throughout his retirement, his sense of adventure guided him.  Ab and Riet continued to travel the world as a couple, with family and close friends.  Their wedding anniversary parties celebrated in other countries were legendary.

Ab will be remembered for his sense of humour, fairness, love of birds and all things footwear.  He was a wise gentleman  and mentor who has left really big boots to fill. He would be thrilled to know that his many global friends and family enjoyed a shot of Baileys in his memory.  Ab would also be grateful for any donations in his honour to be directed to Diabetes Canada, The Myasthenia Gravis Society of Canada or The Carpenter Hospice, Burlington.

A funeral Mass will be held Sat., Dec 4, 11 am at St. Andrew RC Church, Oakville.  Live stream and condolence registry will be offered through Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home.  Due to covid capacity regulations, attendance restrictions will be applied.
