Obituary

The children of Don Moore sadly announce his passing at the well-lived age of ninety-two years in Oakville, Ontario.

Don was a man of many colours. Passionate, curious, fun-loving, intemperate at times, aware of his own eccentricities and interests, and eternally enthusiastic for others to succeed in theirs. He was a tippler of whiskey, a lover of food, a natty dresser, a pipe smoker, a fanatic fly-fisher, a poor carpenter, an entertaining dancer of the Charleston, the family’s Santa, a gardener, an artist, a versatile pianist, a devoted husband and an inspiring father.

Don settled in Oakville in 1957 with his wife, Marvene, after graduating from the Canadian Chiropractic Memorial College in Toronto. Being a chiropractor was his true calling. He loved his patients, and they, in turn, loved him. As was his way, Don fully immersed himself in the art, science, and philosophy of chiropractic, running a successful practice in downtown Oakville for almost forty-five years. He assumed local leadership roles in his profession, served as an instructor in technique, and encouraged many people including some of his own children and grandchildren to follow in his footsteps.

Serving and inspiring others was not Don’s only gift. Originally trained in classical piano, Don turned his hand to playing jazz with dramatic flair, jumping from Scott Joplin to Fats Waller to Oscar Peterson. Outside of piano, he loved listening to music at full blast. We remember his Kris Kristofferson phase, his Vera Lynne phase, his Rachmaninoff phase, his unforgettable Spanish Flamenco guitar phase, and the Jesus Christ Superstar full-score album phase.

Beyond music, Don was an accomplished painter. In his younger years, he emulated oils by the Group of Seven. In his middle years, it was the art of Thomas Chatfield. In his later years, he moved onto water colours. He was equally passionate about his garden, germinating seeds in his home’s basement when Pyramid Power was a craze, or cultivating poppies from seeds covertly lifted from Monet’s Garden in France.

Then, of course, there was Don’s passion for fly-fishing. He co-founded the Izaak Walton Fly Fishing Club in 1971, going on to instruct countless Toronto Sportsmen’s Show attendees in the art of fly-tying. He wrote articles for both “Single Haul” and “Double Haul” and invented numerous flies. It was a point of pride for Don to have been a team member of Fly Fishing Canada, competing abroad in Tasmania and the United Kingdom.

Don was spiritually curious. He studied many faiths, believing in a universal life force. In his final years, he embraced Buddhist teachings. He was fortunate to have been endlessly supported by his late wife, Marvene, whom he adored. Don is survived by his five children Brett (Kathy), Julie, Shauna (Chris), Jim (Carol), and Nicole (Jeff), sixteen grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. We will miss you terribly, Dad. You were one-of-a-kind.

The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Memory & Company for supporting Don in his final years. We also thank our extended families and friends for their support.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 20th, 5-8pm at Kopriva-Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd W, Oakville, ON L6K 1E1. A private family service will follow later. Donations in Don’s memory can be made to the Canadian Chiropractic Memorial College.
