Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of Alan Richmond announces his passing on April 30, 2026. He was 88.

Born in 1938 in Easington Colliery, England, Alan was the son of Violet and Samuel Richmond and grew up in a hardworking coal mining community that shaped his character for life. He began his own career training to be an electrical engineer in the coal mine – an early reflection of his determination and ambition.

In 1959, Alan married the love of his life, Nancy, beginning a remarkable partnership that spanned nearly 67 years. Together, they built a life grounded in family, hard work and shared adventure. Alan was a devoted family man. He was a proud father to his daughters, Gillian (Mike Fabrizi) and Alison, and took great joy in their accomplishments and adventures. Nothing, however, brought him more happiness than his grandchildren, Andrew (Natalie) and Sarah (Matt) whom he cherished and adored.

Alan’s career took him across England and Scotland before he and Nancy made the bold move to Canada in 1970 for what was intended to be a two-year opportunity. Embracing the possibilities of a new country, they chose to stay. In 1975, Alan founded Mondel Engineering, growing it into a successful company which he led with integrity and a deep respect for the people who worked alongside him, until selling the business in 1995.

Alan was known for his strong work ethic – but equally for his sincerity and generosity. He believed deeply in giving back, whether to his employees, his community or his family. His simple philosophy, “It’s nice to be nice,” guided how he lived each day.

Beyond his professional life, Alan and Nancy shared a love of travel that took them around the world. While many journeys were memorable, their 23 winters spent in Naples, Florida held a special place in their hearts. There, they welcomed family time and again, creating a lifetime of lasting memories together. At home, Alan found great joy for years in gardening, taking pride in his yard with the same care he gave to all aspects of his life.

Alan will be remembered for his quiet strength, his generosity and the deep love he had for those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, humility and kindness that will continue to inspire all who had the good fortune of knowing him. In his own words and fittingly so, “He was a goodie.”

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate team at OTMH for their care and support. In keeping with his wishes, a private family service will take place.

Should you wish to honour Alan’s memory, the family invites you to consider a donation to the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital or a charity of your choice.
